What is a Blogging Niche and Why You Need a Niche to Blog!!

What is a blog?

Before we even get into what a niche is, let start with the basics. What is a blog?

Even if you’ve never heard of blogging before this, you’ve probably read a lot of them in your life.

That new recipe you just tried out online likely came from a blog, the question on your homework assignment that you just looked up likely came from a blog. This, right here, is a blog.

According to Google, a blog is “A regularly updated website, typically run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.”

Basically, that’s a whole lot of mumbo jumbo that means a blog is like a diary or a journal that you post on the internet.

Some people may use that journal as a hobby blog, and just write whatever they feel like, and some (like me and you!) want to use that journal to spread our expertise and knowledge into a blogging business!

Now that we have that out of the way, let’s get on to the good stuff!

What is a blogging niche?

A niche is a general topic that you choose to write about. It’s the basic theme for your blog, the one topic you are an expert in. So, for example, the help in blogging is my niche. That’s the topic- or “niche” – I have decided to write about.

What other types of blogging niches are there?

Any topic that you blog about can become a niche.

The problem, however, isn’t exactly what can you write about, its what’s profitable to write about. If you really want to turn your blog into a business, you have to blog where the money is.

Why do you need a blogging niche?

A niche is important for a few different reasons, for you and your readers.

While it is highly possible to run a multi-niched lifestyle blog, as a beginner, these blogs can be hard to monetize. It can also be bad for SEO and attracting readers. So, a niche is good for a few reasons.

1. Having a niche keeps you focused

When you don’t have a niche and your blog about #allthethings it can be super overwhelming to come up with what to write next.

Honestly, for me even with a niche is hard because I have so many ideas to write about! So I can only imagine what would happen if I opened myself up to other topics. Without a niche, you can find yourself thinking,

Do I share my latest music?

What about the food I cooked today?

Or I could write about my latest experience in college?

However, if you have a niche blog about cooking, you always know whatever topic you choose will be about your latest cooking experience.

2. Having a niche makes you look like an expert

When you pick a niche you should choose one that you know lots about. This will show readers that you’re an expert on your topic.

Picture this, someone (let’s call him Charles) sees your post on facebook for an amazing gadget, so Charles clicks over to read your blog Woohoo you have a reader!

And better yet? he loves the gadget review and can’t wait to try it! Now he wants to see what other amazing gadgets reviews you have, so he goes to your blog home page.

And… what’s this? You have blog posts about your latest holiday break trip, how to study for finals and the latest DIY craft you came up with. As a matter of fact, you’ve never posted another review on your blog after that gatget one. japaaa!!

Charles leaves your blog and likely won’t come back- he might not even try out the amazing gadget!

Not so great.

3. Having a niche is easier to monetize

Let’s take a look at the last scene again, however, let’s say your niche is cooking. Again, Charles finds your amazing egusi soup recipe and clicks over to read it. Yay!

However, this time when she clicks onto your blog home page everything about cooking comes up! Tons of amazing recipes, cooking tips and more! Charles has found the jackpot!

And, on top of that, he finds out you have a cookbook he can buy! If your free content is that great, imagine how awesome your cookbook will be! Sold!

See the difference? And, even if you don’t have a product to sell right off the bat and you are just focused on affiliate marketing for the moment, that’s okay too.

If Charles clicks to your blog and finds that you are recommending other peoples cookbooks or cooking tools to him, he is more likely to buy them (from your link)because she trusts you’re an expert in your topic! It’s a win-win.

How do you know what blogging niches are profitable?

Now that you understand why you need a niche, the question now becomes- what niche do you choose to make money from?

It’s not only important to pick a niche that you love and are knowledgeable in if you want to have a blogging business- you have to pick a profitable niche as well.
